Preparations are underway for the exciting heritage project ‘Lest We Forget’ coming to Margam Country Park this November. Awarded through the Heritage Lottery Fund’s then and now programme, the event will mark the Centenary of the First World War.

During the event, the inside of Margam Castle will be transformed by large scale floral installations provided by the National Association Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS). ‘Lest We Forget’ will see over 100 flower arrangers from across South Wales coming together to create 50 spectacular floral designs. Each floral design will be linked to the Centenary of the First World War. This will be Margam Castle’s first ever Flower Festival.

Throughout the summer the Friends of Margam Country Park were busy holding workshops for Park Friends and visitors to make card poppies. Today both members of the Friends group and Park Staff started the process of hanging up 400 of the card poppies in Margam Castle’s Staircase Hall. The poppies will surround the Flower Festival displays and many of them feature a heartfelt memorial message inscribed on their petals.
Members of the Friends Group also created ‘card poppy kits’ which will be available for visitors to collect from The Orangery. The poppy kits will allow visitors to create their very own card poppy, add a memorial message and place it on the ‘Poppy Tribute Wall’, situated inside The Orangery.

Another display visitors will come across inside Margam Castle will be the wall of 1,566 hearts, each heart representing one day that the war lasted. Members of Margam Park’s Friends group, Park staff and members of NAFAS have all been invited to create a heart. The Team at Margam have been busy creating their own hearts to add to the display.

In addition to the Flower Festival, there will be a ‘Gallery of Local Heroes’ that showcases Neath Port Talbot’s very own connections to the First World War. The Gallery of Local Heroes will be an exhibition of photographs and stories of people from the locality who contributed to the war effort, some who perished and others who returned home. The exhibition has been compiled by the Neath Port Talbot Library & Museum Service with contributions made by the people of Neath Port Talbot.

‘Lest We Forget’ will mark the Centenary of the First World War and will bring the communities of Neath Port Talbot and its surrounding areas together to preserve the memories and heritage of the people who lived through this time.
